Lee Kang-Sheng in Vive l'Amour.

by Bob Boone

Cleveland-An unoccupied apartment in Taipei breeds a bizarre love triangle in Tsai Ming-liang's second feature film, Vive l'Amour. At the pinnacle of the triangle is a young male street vendor detached from any longings for love. He is the object of desire for both a real estate agent in her mid-40s and anxious to be loved, and a young gay man frightened and yet desperate in his awakening passion for other men. The threesome's surreptitious inhabiting of a large vacant apartment results in a tangle of jealousy and awkward positions.

Director Tsai Ming-liang used scant dialogue and action to sustain an atmosphere of boredom and frustration, a mood which may

extend to audience members expecting witty and insightful exchanges or substantive plot shifts.

This is not a Taiwanese film in the same vein as The Wedding Banquet. The minimalist style did, however, help to earn Vive l'Amour a share (with Before the Rain) of the grand prize at the 1994 Venice Film Festival. Rebels of the Neon God, the director's first film (1993), was also the recipient of a number of international prizes, and similarly dealt with individuals' alienation in large urban areas.

Vive l'Amour plays Saturday, November 9 at 7 pm and Sunday, November 10 at 8:45 pm at the Cleveland Cinematheque, 11141 East Blvd., University Circle. Call 216421-7450 for additional information.
